Misconception 1:  You have to have a degree in Art History to understand and appreciate art.

Not true. It is true that the art world can seem daunting and even unwelcoming. You can hear a pin drop in most galleries and curators seem to size you up by asking questions to assess your knowledge.   Many people would rather skip the embarrassment of not recognizing the stylings of artists like Monet and Picasso than begin to explore the kinds of art and artists that inspire them. Perhaps my favorite thing about the social media age is being able to effortlessly connect with likeminded individuals across the globe.  I heard this song for the first time doing research for my upcoming trip to Thailand on a travel blog.  The blogger, who lives in Ireland, personally offered up her best travel tips for two of the islands I will be going to.  This song was the background music of her vlog of a similar trip to the country in 2015.  I am touched by her graciousness and inspired by this music and the images from her trip.

The Bohemian Sophisticate Toddler Room

One of my fears before having kids was that my living space would be taken over by Disney characters.  Everywhere you turn, you see Disney children’s products…Disney clothes, Disney bedding, Disney dishes… They even put Disney characters on diaper packaging… It’s overwhelming!  Don’t get me wrong, I love Disney but my kids don’t need their characters’ faces on everything they own.  I want my kids bedrooms to feel youthful but also aesthetically pleasing for adults.  I’m also a big fan of gender-neutral coloring.  I don’t mind some femininity but that doesn’t mean my daughter has to have a pink room.

I could sit an watch music videos all day…  They provide me so much inspiration and this tune really captures what The Bohemian Sophisticate is all about.  Jain incorporates Arabic percussion, African rhythms, electro, reggae, soul and hip hop into her sound.  She’s got some other great songs on her album ZANAKA too!  Check it out!!

What is a Bohemian sophisticate?  Dictionary.com (2017) and Merriam-Webster.com (2017), define a Bohemian as a native or inhabitant of Bohemia and a bohemian as someone that is a wanderer or a person living an unconventional life such as a writer or artist.  A sophisticate is highly complicated or someone having a refined knowledge of the ways of the world cultivated through experience, education, or culture (Sophisticate, 2017; Sophisticated, 2017; Sophisticated, 2017).

“Bohemian” and “Sophisticate” are two words that are not incongruous. However, they are not generally paired together, especially in a style sense. Someone with a sophisticated style likes clean lines and classic pieces while someone with boho style favors patterns and flowery detailing.  Although some blending of genres and varying characteristics is inevitable, we tend to gravitate towards the same things time after time based on our tastes.  That is not to say that we must limit ourselves in what we enjoy but boundaries exist in what meshes well together and what doesn’t. Bohemian, bohemian or both?

Many people love bohemian style, but are they Bohemian?  When you think of the word “bohemian,” the first thoughts that come to mind might be bright colors, long flowing dresses, flowers and tribal themes.  However, “Bohemian” means something entirely different to people with ancestors from Bohemia.  For those who are unfamiliar, Bohemia was a country formerly located in the current-day Czech Republic, a place I was fortunate to visit in 2013.
